It is the day after Christmas and I went to the gym. I didn’t want to go when I woke up, but I forced myself to get out of bed and get in there to get my sweat on. We ate so much food yesterday, and that caused sleep deprivation. I don’t know why we do that to ourselves.
When I got to the gym there were max 15 people in there with me and on most other mornings there are a minimum of 50-75 people working out. I realized that we are in the week between Christmas and New Years, and this is the time where people take a “vacation” from their priorities in life. It has historically been the week where it is ok to have cheat meals, eat more junk food then we normally would, drink more then we normally would and become extremely lazy. After all we are spending time with family and this is the time for cheer. Trust me, I have some of the same patterns and habits. I believe we have just been trained to behave in this way as an American culture.
I watch people year after year, slack off for a couple weeks, feel awful, but yet at the same time it inspires people to create resolutions. The gym is only filled with max 15 people during this week and come Jan 2nd, it is filled to the brim with people starting their new years resolutions.
This is where I feel the syndrome comes into play. It happens year after year. People really analyze their lives toward the end of the year, reflecting on all the choices they have made (good or bad), and decide that the new year is going to bring them to all they have set intentions for the previous 5 years.
I am going to start that business, take off the 20-30lbs that were added in the last 12-24 months, be present more, do more fun things, be the person I envision myself to be….
The first month goes well. Then you hit a roadblock. Then you allow yourself to not do it one day, then two days, and you justify that it is ok and before you know it. You are totally off the resolution high and back into your comfort zone that didn’t allow you to create a habit out of the changes you made. Life goes on the same way it did every year before with maybe one or two small gains but the rest is status quo.
I have decided that my word for 2023 is Consistency. I am going to deliberately be consistent. In my businesses, in my personal endeavors, in how I stick to my habits, everything. Consistency is key. All it takes is small steps daily to make it happen. Getting up at the same time every morning to get your morning off to a good start is a small step that you can take. Deciding when you are going to fit in the exercise that your body needs daily (even if it is a walk outside), is another small step. Avoiding overindulging in your favorite, bad for you food…Starting a nutrition plan with supplements that boost your daily capacity and increase the wellness in your body is another small step. They all add to large achievements by this time of year and you won’t want to fall off for the last two weeks of the year if you are consistent.
To get the desired results you wish to obtain, you need to be consistent. I need to practice this concept as much as the next person so I am going to hold myself accountable here!
I am challenging you in 2023 to see where you can add some consistency in your life.
